Planning perspective

How I’d plan this experience

I’d choose this cruise if you want to look for the aurora without committing to a long drive out of Reykjavík. The appeal is the contrast: dark water and northern sky ahead, with the city skyline on the way out. It is a compact evening plan on paper, but I’d treat it as a weather-dependent experience rather than a scheduled sighting. That mindset makes the included second attempt especially valuable, while leaving room for the possibility that nature or conditions may change the plan.

Who this cruise suits

I think this is a particularly sensible fit for Reykjavík-based travellers who like the idea of being on the water and want a sheltered fallback between spells outside. You can watch from outdoor platforms when the sky is promising, then warm up in the heated saloon rather than spending the whole evening exposed. Families with young children may find that flexibility useful too, since prams and strollers are permitted. It is less suited to anyone who needs a completely predictable, strictly timed evening: sightings are not guaranteed and unfavourable conditions can mean a short-notice cancellation.

Make the outdoor deck your viewing base

My advice is to dress for the exposed deck even though warm floatable overalls are available. A hat and gloves are specifically worth bringing, and I’d keep expectations realistic about how long you will want to remain outside in wind and cold. The indoor space, toilets and Wi-Fi make this more forgiving than an all-outdoor wait, but they do not replace being outside when you want an unobstructed view of the sky. Traveller feedback also points to the upper deck as the place to prioritise for viewing, provided you are comfortable braving the temperature.

Plan for a flexible finish, not just two hours

I’d avoid booking a tightly fixed commitment immediately afterward. The advertised cruise is around two hours, yet feedback shows that the search can run longer when there is reason to keep looking or wait for stronger activity. That can be a welcome trade-off if seeing the aurora is your priority, but a poor fit if you are travelling with exhausted children, have an early departure, or simply need a firm bedtime. Build in a buffer and regard any extension as a possibility rather than an entitlement.

Use the retry policy well—and know the mobility caveat

For a short Reykjavík stay, I’d schedule this early in your trip if you can. If the lights do not appear, complimentary tickets for another night reduce the risk of a complete miss, but they are most useful when you have spare evenings available. Arrive at the Old Harbour ticket office at least 15 minutes ahead; there is no hotel pick-up. I’d also be careful not to interpret the broad accessibility listing as full step-free access: limited mobility is welcomed, but steep stairs and high thresholds may restrict access to interior areas and toilets.
