Planning perspective
How I’d plan this experience
I’d choose this three-day small-group trip if you want Iceland’s headline landscapes without self-driving or constantly repacking. Its appeal is the deliberate mix: the Golden Circle first, then the South Coast’s glacier lagoon and ice-cave element, with two nights of accommodation built in. I think it suits first-time visitors who value context from a guide and are happy for a compact itinerary to shape the trip rather than trying to see every corner of Iceland.
Who I’d recommend it for
This is a particularly sensible fit for couples, friends and solo travellers who want a guided introduction to several very different Icelandic environments in one short break. The group is capped at 16, which should feel more conversational and manageable than a large coach tour, while still being a shared experience rather than a private one.
I’d also put it on the shortlist for active-but-not-specialist travellers. The stated physical level is easy, and the feedback consistently describes time outside as manageable rather than technical. That said, ‘easy’ should not be confused with indoor sightseeing: you will be out in exposed natural settings, so comfort in changeable weather matters more than athletic ambition.
Choose the room option with care
My advice for solo travellers is to decide early whether the shared-room arrangement genuinely suits you. The standard option uses a shared room, and solo guests who do not select a single room are paired with a participant of the same gender. That can be a sociable, economical way to travel, but it is a meaningful privacy trade-off after full days on the road.
For everyone else, the useful comfort point is that the two included nights have private bathrooms. Breakfast is included twice, while lunch and dinner are not, so I’d budget mentally for meals along the way rather than assuming this is an all-inclusive escape.
Expect full days, not a slow retreat
I’d choose this itinerary when you are happy to trade leisurely lingering for breadth. Day one alone combines Þingvellir, the Geysir area and Gullfoss before continuing south to the overnight stop; later the route reaches Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach. It is an efficient way to connect famous sights that would be awkward to cover independently in a very short stay.
The upside of travelling with a small group is that the guide can respond to conditions and make itinerary changes when needed. Feedback points to a pace that feels busy but generally not rushed, with breaks and stops through the day. Still, pack your patience alongside your camera: weather-related flexibility is part of the design, not a failure of it.
Treat the ice cave and Northern Lights as nature-led experiences
The ice-cave outing is the adventure-focused centrepiece, with required safety equipment included. I’d bring the recommended waterproof outer layers, warm headwear and gloves, plus good hiking shoes, rather than relying on everyday city clothing. Ice caves are naturally changeable, and the route may use different caves according to conditions; that unpredictability is exactly why flexibility is essential here.
I would not book solely in expectation of seeing the Northern Lights. The overnight location may offer an opportunity when skies cooperate, but a guided Northern Lights hunt is explicitly not part of the tour. Think of any sighting as a welcome possibility, while the assured value lies in the day-by-day landscapes and guided cave experience.

Accessibility and practical details
- Suitable for all physical fitness levels
- What to bring: Warm outdoor clothing, a waterproof jacket and pants, head wear, and gloves. Good hiking shoes are recommended.
- The order of the itinerary might change due to weather conditions. Your guide will have full power to make amendments to the itinerary when necessary.
- Minimum age is 8 years old
- This tour has the flexibility to make the most of the seasonal changes such as changes in weather and conditions. During the summer Iceland is characterized by energizing bright nights and midnight sun. Between August and May, if the forecast is suitable, you might even be able to spot the magical show put on by the Northern Lights. It is important to note that a guided Northern Lights hunt is however not included in the tour. Other wonderful and interesting possibilities can also come up during your south coast tour with us as Iceland is full of surprises.
- We use a couple of different ice caves for our 3 Day Golden Circle & South Coast tour. Ice caves are ever-changing and unpredictable natural phenomena. We usually visit the Crystal Cave at Breiðmerkurjökull during this tour but when the Crystal Cave is inaccessible we will most likely visit Katla Ice Cave. Which ice cave is chosen will however always depend upon the conditions and safety considerations on the day, sometimes a different ice cave will be visited. If conditions do not allow us to visit an ice cave a glacier hike will be offered as an alternative.
- Solo travelers who do not select the single supplement will be accommodated in a shared twin room with another participant of the same gender.
- You can take your day backpack and one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs) on this tour. The combined dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 in). Luggage storage services can be purchased as an optional extra for a small fee.
